Important Insurance Needs for Sports Camps

Organizing a sports camp requires forethought and careful planning, and part of your risk management strategy should be to get quality sports insurance. There is always a risk that accidents—from player injuries to property damage—could occur on your watch. These problems can cause a lot of costly harm to multiple parties. However, if you have the right insurance, you may be able to make a claim against your policy to cover the costs of these losses.

Insurance for your sports camp is too great an asset to go without, and Bene-Marc, Inc. can help you get optimized coverage.

The Importance of Insuring a Sports Camp
Camp organizers never know when participant injuries, property damage, lawsuits or other challenges may arise in their operations. However, the costs of these challenges may place a considerable financial burden on the camp. But sports insurance will be there to help you cover the costs of these setbacks.

Because of the protection it provides, sports camp insurance may benefit the following parties:

  • Camp owners and employees (e.g., coaches, referees, janitors, cooks and counselors)

  • Volunteers

  • Participants

  • Family members of participants

  • Spectators

You can better ensure your organization’s ongoing financial security and internal and external stability with the right coverage.

Determining the Coverage You Need
Most sports camps will need several types of insurance. By examining the risks you may face in your operations, your Bene-Marc agent can help you pinpoint the right coverage for you. Consider the following risk factors when getting coverage.

General Liabilities
General liability insurance can provide compensation to a third party if they claim the camp is responsible for property damage, bodily injuries or similar losses that they sustained. For example, if a participant or spectator sustains an injury during camp activities, they might sue the camp. General liability coverage can provide them with compensation.

Policies may also contain personal and advertising injury coverage. Personal and advertising coverage may apply in situations when someone accuses you of inappropriate actions like libel, slander or copyright infringement.

Professional Liabilities
Allegations of overly harsh discipline, sexual abuse or child molestation, or inadequate supervision could arise in your camp. Professional liability insurance can help you cover costs related to these challenges, along with legal costs that may arise.

You may find there is some overlap between professional and general liability coverage. With that in mind, you may be able to have these policies written by the same carrier and for similar coverage limits. Your Bene-Marc agent can help you coordinate your coverage.

Commercial Property Damage Risks
Camp property (e.g., structures, equipment, materials) may sustain damage from unexpected hazards. The costs to fix the damage could be significant, and proper commercial property insurance can help you cover these costs.

When considering your property damage exposures, think about whether you will rent third-party property for your camp operations. If you do so, you should ensure that your policies contain appropriate coverage for rented or leased premises property damage. This coverage can enable you to repay the property owner for the losses that are your responsibility.

Automobile Liabilities
Owning or operating vehicles on camp-related business exposes you to risks of accidents and other vehicle hazards. Not only can these accidents lead to employee injuries and vehicle damage, but they may also affect others (e.g., campers who were riding in a camp vehicle that was involved in an accident).

Work with your Bene-Marc agent to ensure your insurance contains appropriate liability coverage for these risks. This may involve carrying commercial auto insurance, which can cover vehicles owned by the camp. You may also need hired/non-owned auto liability (HNOA) coverage. HNOA coverage can apply if someone is driving one of their personally owned vehicles for business purposes.

Workers’ Compensation Risks
Workers’ compensation insurance helps businesses compensate employees who have sustained occupational injuries. Since camp workers will face considerable injury costs, this coverage is often essential to have. In many jurisdictions, it is mandatory to carry coverage to comply with workplace safety standards.

Other Considerations
Keep in mind that along with the exposures mentioned above, other risks could threaten your camp, and that may merit various types of coverage. Additionally, you will need to ensure that your policy complies with all mandatory coverage requirements in your jurisdiction. Your Bene-Marc agent can help determine the best insurance solutions to help you address these needs.

With the help of your sports insurance, you’ll ensure that your camp is prepared for potential problems. Contact Bene-Marc, Inc. today, and you’ll be on your way to optimized coverage solutions in no time.
